Haines R. Johnston

Preemption, Illinois Haines R. Johnston, 86, of Preemption, Illinois, died Monday, April 1, 2002, in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Burial is in German Cemetery, Sherrard. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Preemption United Methodist Church or Alzheimer's Association. Mr. Johnston was born May 13, 1915, in Woodhull, Illinois, the son of Ralph Hudson Johnston DVM and Gertrude Mae Nutter Johnston. He married Dolores Rosine Zwicker on August 30, 1940, in Davenport. In earlier years, he worked at IH Farmall Works in Rock Island, and then was a partner in Nichol and Johnston Trucking to Chicago. He was employed at Bettendorf Tank Arsenal when he had to leave to serve two years in the U. S. Navy during WW II. He farmed for 33 years, operated Sherrard Magnet and Machine Co. and Vender Systems Inc., and was a cattle broker. He was past master of Preemption Masonic Lodge, and a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline, Mohammed Shrine in Peoria, and Preemption United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Dolores; a son Howard of Sherrard; a sister Marjorie Renner; two nephews and two great-nephews.
