George H. White, 84, of Coal Valley, Illinois, well-known Coal Valley businessman and proud WW II Marine Veteran, died Monday, December 21, 2009, in his home.
Services are 9:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, with Father Jim DeBisschop officiating. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, with a Christian Wake Service at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
George Henry White was born November 15, 1925, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Dana and Emma Tofting White. He graduated from Iowa State University and served with the U. S. Marines in the 2nd Marine Division in WW II. He married Gwendolyn Mae Michel on June 15, 1947, in Hills, Iowa. She died November 2, 1984. George started the Corn Crib Nursery in Coal Valley in 1972, and retired in 1987.
He served as Coal Valley Township Supervisor and on the Rock Island County Board, and was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley. He helped restore and bring a WW II Landing Ship Tank (LST) back to the U.S. in 2000.
George is survived by seven children and their spouses, Duane and Mary Ann White of Coal Valley, Joanne and Mike Schumacher of Normal, Illinois, Ken and Connie White of Coal Valley, Marilyn and Greg Lillibridge of Byron, Illinois, Donna and John Zurn of Geneva, Illinois, Brian and Michelle White of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and John White of Davenport, Iowa; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and one sister.
