John H. Newton, 88, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Thursday, February 22, 2007, in Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.
Services are 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, with The Reverend Ray Guthrie officiating. Burial is in Homestead Cemetery, in Rural Township. A Vigil Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, with visitation following until 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Church or Rock Island County Historical Society.
John Henry Newton was born February 17, 1919, in Moline, the son of William Henry and Bessie (Bailey) Newton. He graduated from Coal Valley High School, and married Mary Gainey on November 8, 1947, in Colona, Illinois. He was employed in construction and management at Montgomery Elevator Company, Moline, for 40 years, retiring in 1979. He farmed near Coal Valley his entire life.
He was former sexton of Homestead and Beulah Cemeteries, past president of the Orion School Board, past president of the Rock Island County Historical Society, and a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. He enjoyed history, family genealogy, computers, and tinkering.
John is survived by his wife, Mary; four children and their spouses, Dr. Michael and Connie Newton of Cincinnati, Ohio, Richard and Pamela Newton of Rock Falls, Illinois, Nancy and Keith Hamerlinck of Cleveland, Illinois, and Ruth and Bill Barg of Mission Viejo, California; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Patrick Newton, Angelique and James Saddoris, Ashley Newton, Vicki and Aaron Brown, Amy and Donald Gladfelter, Sara and Harley Nicely, David Barg, Matthew Barg, and Natalie Barg; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald D. Newton, a brother, Dr. William Morgan Newton, and sisters, Mary Charlotte Campbell and Frances Carlson.
