Martin H. Bowerman, 71, of Coal Valley, Illinois, a proud Marine Corps veteran and Teamsters Union Steward, died unexpectedly Sunday morning in the emergency room at Trinity Moline.
Services are 9:40 a.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, and 10 a.m. Friday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church Coal Valley, with Fr. Jim DeBisschop officiating. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Jude?s Children?s Hospital.
Martin Holt Bowerman was born February 19, 1939, in Murphysboro, Illinois, the son of Martin Howell and Rosalyn Evelyn Holt Bowerman, He graduated from Geneseo High School, and proudly served two tours in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Judy Imel in 1959, in Geneseo. He later married Marjorie Cummings Henkels on April 30, 1976, in Moline. He was a driver for UPS in Davenport for the past 24 years. He previously was a machinist at the Rock Island Arsenal, John Deere, and IH Farmall Works.
Martin was a proud member and Steward of Teamsters Union Local #710, and member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, and American Legion Post #246, Moline. He loved spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren, and enjoyed collecting Marine Corps memorabilia, country music, especially by George Jones, and cowboy movies, especially with John Wayne.
Martin is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children and their spouses, Richard Bowerman of Davenport, Iowa, Tracy Bowerman-Bertrand of Baldwin, Michigan, Amy Bowerman Swanson and her husband Gene Swanson of Coal Valley, and Scott Bowerman of Moline; step-children and their spouses, Debbie Henkels-Flanigan and her husband Don Flanigan of Mandeville, Louisiana, Randy Henkels and his wife Susan of Normal, Illinois, Sue Wendt of Moline, Pam Henkels-Snell and her husband Scott Snell of Arlington, Virginia, and Bobbie Henkels- Kessinger and her husband Brian Kessinger of Jacksonville, Florida; 18 grandchildren, Andrew, Bryce and Chase Bertrand, Kaylie Bowerman (whom her grandfather lovingly called Charlie) and Carter Swanson, Paizley and Mimzi Bowerman, Patrick and Andie Flanigan, Alex and Kevin Henkels, Lisa and Katie Wendt, Emily and Julia Snell, Lindsey Henkels, and Jeremy and Kyle Kessinger; two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Brodie Wendt; siblings, Michael Chapman of Bettendorf, Iowa, Gary Chapman of Moline; Carol Bishop of San Antonio, Texas, and Rose Wiley of Byron, Michigan. He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Holt Bowerman, and siblings, Ruth Powers, Mary Douglas Peterson, and Sharon Kamen.
