H. Albert Zimmer, M.D., well known Moline physician, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008, in Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Moline, with The Reverend Dr. Mark E. Gehrke officiating. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or Rock Island County Historical Society.
Henry Albert Zimmer was born August 16, 1927, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Henry A. and Irene (Almlof) Zimmer. He graduated from Moline High School in 1945, from Augustana College in 1948, from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1953, and finished his residency and fellowship at the University of Chicago in 1958. He married Marilyn Bolster Armstrong in 1962, in Moline.
Dr. Zimmer was in private practice in Moline from 1958 to 1993 with an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialty. He was also senior A. M. E. Physician for the FAA and a railroad surgeon for the Rock Island Lines. He served a president of the Medical Staff at the former Moline Lutheran Hospital and was president of the Illinois Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Association.
He was a volunteer and member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Rock Island County Historical Society; a member of the Rock Island Railroad Historical Society and the Mississippi Valley Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America; and a former member of Short Hills Country Club and Moline Rotary Club. He enjoyed genealogy, railroad trains and antique cars.
Dr. Zimmer is survived locally by his wife, Marilyn and his son, The Honorable Richard Zimmer and his wife Jill; two daughters, Lenore Cowdery CPC and her husband Doug of Hampton, Illinois, and Caroline McCormick of Winter Park, Florida; four grandchildren, Heather Carson R.N., Sgt. Heidi O?Brien, Garrett McCormick, and Sean McCormick; two great-grandchildren, Addison and Hailey O?Brien; his brother, The Reverend Peter Zimmer and his wife Lela of Prince George, British Columbia; his sister, Kay Strate of Dana Point, California; and a step-sister, Jane Zimmer.
