Gary R. VanOteghem, 71, of Moline, Illinois, died Monday, April 1, 2019, in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Gary's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Patriot Guard Riders will stand in respect for Gary's military service. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Gary Robert VanOteghem was born April 20, 1947, in Moline, to Robert Charles and Norma Mae (McCartney) VanOteghem. He married Linda McCoy on November 1, 1969, in Moline. He graduated from Moline High School, attended Black Hawk College, and served in the US Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was employed as an assembler by John Deere Harvester Works for 32 years, retiring in 1996. After retiring, he worked for Zimmerman Honda and Red Dog Run Golf Course. He was a member of the East End Club, was a huge Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and enjoyed golfing, bowling, yard work, and music.
Gary is survived by his wife, Linda; two sons, Steve VanOteghem and David VanOteghem, both of Moline; four grandchildren, Jessica, Kyle, and Gabrielle VanOteghem and Alyssa Nuno; four great-grandchildren, Lucy and Eden VanOteghem, Avery Byrne, and Norie Rahmatulla; and his best friend, Russ Reese of East Moline. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey VanOteghem, his parents, and sister, Patricia VanOteghem.
