Clarence Gale Fiscus was born in Wellborn, Kansas, on October 13, 1921, to Clarence and Zelmah Fiscus. After graduating from high school in Winchester, KS, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Fiscus served his country in World War II aboard the Battleship New Mexico in the North Atlantic and the 571 Destroyer Claxton in most of the Pacific vital campaigns, including MacArthur?s invasion of the Philippines. He was considered for the position of Chief of the 572 Dyson Destroyer - a job he lost in a coin toss - and served in Radar Interception Picket Duty around Okinawa until the end of the War. He was awarded the Silver Star, a Presidential Unit Citation and 10 Campaign Stars. At the end of the war, Gale was discharged with a Chief?s rating.
He married Ruth O. Underwood in Leavenworth, KS on June 1, 1946. Moving to Denver, Colorado, in 1948, he became employed by the Colorado State Highway Patrol in purchasing, supplies and maintenance. The family moved to the Quad Cities in September, 1954, where Gale became Operations Manager of Sylvan Acres, Inc., a dairy and cattle business with headquarters in Bettendorf. Mr. Fiscus founded the Plow City Personnel Agency in 1960, a general employment business in which he was active until 1965.
He retired from Rock Island Arsenal in 1990 after working as a Systems Analyst in international logistics. During the Vietnam War, Gale served 6 months in Vietnam, on behalf of the Arsenal, in data processing.
In service to God, Gale became active as Sunday School Superintendent in Denver, where he also sang in the choir and drove the church bus. Once relocated to the Quad Cities, Moline Gospel Temple became his church home for many years. He gladly served as Superintendent of the 6th grade class for 20 years, followed by 10 years with Jr. High age groups. Gale taught Sunday School and was a member of the Board of Directors and President of the School Committee for the Temple Christian Academy. His ministries expanded to include choir, deacon, Board member and overseeing maintenance within the bus outreach program.
Sharing God?s love with children through dramatic plays and music, both at the church and the Temple Christian Academy, has been a big part of Gale?s life. He will be best remembered by the community for his portrayal of Scrooge in ?The Gospel According to Scrooge,? a production he participated in each year from 1982 through 2000. He also used his musical talents to bring glory to God with a men?s gospel quartet, The King?s Men, together with Dick Crow, John Barker and Dick Melin.
In 2001, Gale became a charter member of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, giving service as a member of the initial Board of Directors.
