Jack G. Taylor, 78, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, in Trinity Medical Center, Moline, Illinois.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Dr. Wilfred Karsten officiating. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley, or American Heart Association.
Jack Gerald Taylor was born September 2, 1930, in Moline, Illinois, the son of Clarence and Darlene (Cook) Taylor, and graduated from UTHS, East Moline. He married Joy Samuelson Tunberg in 1994, in Hawaii.
A journeyman carpenter, he was a member of Carpenters Union Local #166 receiving his 60 year pin. He was a well-known local carpenter throughout his career, retiring in 1991 from Hodge Construction. Jack had a life long passion for carpentry where quality work gave him personal satisfaction.
Jack was a U.S. Army veteran serving as combat engineer and staff sergeant during the Korean War. He had many special interests including bass fishing, hunting, gardening and landscaping. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Two Rivers YMCA, Moline American Legion Post #246, and a local card club. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and the household dog, Frasier. Jack loved watching the Cubs, Bears and the Fighting Illini.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Joy; daughter, Christine A. Taylor of Moline; son, William Taylor; step-children and their spouses, Michele and Ed Schotanus of Connecticut, and Christopher K. J. and Cynthia Tunberg of Indiana; three grandchildren, Zachary and Aubrey Tunberg and Ian Schotanus; a brother, Donald C. Taylor of Oklahoma; and a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Gene Long of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Taylor.
