Fred J. Koontz, 61, of Moline, Illinois, died unexpectedly on Monday, October 1, 2012, shortly after arrival at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, Illinois.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, with The Reverend Dr. Wilfred Karsten officiating. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Visitation is 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to the church, the Genesis Medical Center Davenport Nursing Scholarship, or the American Cancer Society.
Fred John Koontz was born July 4, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of George, Jr. and Marcella (Hagen) Koontz. He married Virginia DeNess on March 10, 1973, in Moline. He graduated from Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Illinois in 1969, and received his bachelor?s degree in business administration from Illinois State University in 1974.
Fred was a bus driver for MetroLink for 31 1/2 years, retiring in 2006. He was a current member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Coal Valley.
He was a longtime officer for the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 313, an officer with the ATU Illinois Joint Conference Board and was a member of the Tri-City Men's Rose and Garden Club. He volunteered for the Moline Police Department, was an APRIS reader at WVIK, and was an avid bowler with VFW League and Men?s Senior League. He traveled extensively with family and friends, camped, fished and enjoyed time at Camp Hauberg in Port Byron, Illinois.
Fred is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters and their husbands, Melissa and Paul Ondercin of Syracuse, New York, and Kimberly and Tres Poe of Belleville, Illinois; grandchildren, Elizabetha, Michal, Robert, and Katherina Ondercin; siblings, Arlene and Wayne Koontz, both of Wanatah, Indiana; and an aunt, Susie B. Koontz of Wanatah. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, George Koontz III and Robert Koontz, and his in-laws, Frank and Nancy DeNess.
