Elizabeth L. Barclay

Elizabeth L. Barclay, 98, North Hill Retirement Village, East Moline, formerly of Rock Island, died Wednesday, January 9, 2002, in her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Coal Valley. The Reverend Robert Hagen will officiate. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Memorials may be made to her church or Easter Seals Foundation.

The former Elizabeth Lavenus Lees was born August 6, 1903, in Coal Valley, the daughter of Thomas R. and Matilda Krapp Lees. She received her elementary education in Coal Valley, graduated from Moline High School in 1921, and attended Augustana College, Rock Island. She married Bernays L. Barclay on July 10, 1923, in St. Louis, Missouri. He died June 13, 1988. Elizabeth taught in a one-room school house in Andalusia, Illinois, and at Willard School in Moline.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Coal Valley, where she served as organist for over forty years. She was a member of Quad City Chapter of the American Theater Organ Society, the East Moline Woman's Club, and the Augustana College Endowment Society. She was the first wardrobe mistress of the Quad City Music Guild.

Elizabeth is survived by a son, James Barclay and his wife Shirley of Battle Creek, Michigan; a daughter, Marilyn Barclay Oldefest and her husband Willis of Milan; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Bernays and Clair Barclay of Bellmore, New York, James and Barb Barclay of Evergreen, Colorado, Laurel Beth and Pat McIsaac of Lake City, Michigan, Shannon and Keith Stoudt of Bedford, Michigan, Marilyn Barclay and Markus Stadler of Madison, Tennessee, Judith and Charles Toppert of Hillsdale, Jennifer and Joseph Pacha of Marion, Iowa, Jeff Miller of Clinton, Iowa, Jayne and Decker Ploehn of Bettendorf. Julius and Melissa Miller of Cordova, and Jonnathan and Tammy Miller of Peoria, Illinois; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Violet Lees Blaser of Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers, John Lees and Thomas Lees, and sisters, Gertrude Lindquist, Berdina Branberg, and Lela Hass.
