Eleanor M. Lewis, 89, of East Moline, Illinois, long time community leader, died peacefully in her home at Park Vista Retirement Community on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.
Services are 4 p.m. Saturday at in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, preceded by visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception at Short Hills Country Club, East Moline, following the service. Burial will be in Colosse Baptist Cemetery, Windsor, Virginia, at a later date. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Moline, or a favorite charity.
Eleanor Maie Watkins was born October 27, 1923, in Detroit Michigan, to Shirley Clyde and Eva Smith Joyner Watkins. She married Robert R. (Sam) Lewis on September 8, 1945, in Windsor, Virginia. He died on December 29, 1982.
Eleanor served as a member, volunteer and leader at a number of civic, social and charitable organizations in the Quad Cities. She worked with Visiting Nurses and Homemaker Association of Rock Island County and served as its first president after the association was formed by combining the Community Nurses of East Moline and the Visiting Nurses and Homemakers Association of Rock Island.
She delivered Meals on Wheels weekly for 17 years. She was a member of the Moline Women?s Club, Garden Department and served as treasurer. She was a member of Chapter GQ of the sisterhood of P.E.O. and served terms as president, vice president, corresponding secretary and treasurer. She was a member of the International Order of Kings Daughters and Sons and served for many years as state treasurer of the Illinois Branch of the organization. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution ? Mary Little Deere-Fort Armstrong Chapter and served as chapter treasurer.
Eleanor was an avid bridge player. She was a long time member of Short Hills Country Club in East Moline, and a member of First Baptist Church of Moline since 1962.
She is survived by her four children, Ann Lewis of Boise, Idaho, Bob Lewis and Steve Flack of Davenport, Iowa, Bill Lewis and Donna Griffin of East Moline, and Jim Lewis of Nashville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Chris and Jamie Lange of Boise, Katy Lange of Nashville, Ryland Lewis of Moline, Cara Lewis of East Moline and Lisa Lewis of Rock Island; great-grandchildren, Carson Hays of Nashville, and Cosmo Lange of Boise; and siblings, Patricia Schools of Richmond, Virginia, and S. Clyde Watkins of Lakeland, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, and brother, William J. Watkins.
