Edgar Mitchell, 77, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Thursday, March 30, 2017, in his son's home in Orion, Illinois.
Services are 9:30 a.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, 1700 1st Street, Coal Valley, with Fr. Jim DeBisschop officiating. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation is 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, followed by a Christian Wake Service at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church.
Edgar James Mitchell was born August 24, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa, to Edgar John and Bridget (McGrath) Mitchell. He married Karen Delores Peacock on December 2, 1961, in Davenport. She died December 12, 2016. He was a carpenter and cabinet maker, and a partner in Mitchell Brothers Construction. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, and a founding member of Quad City Vintage Rods. He was "country" and a NASCAR fan before either was cool, built custom cars and street rods, and drag raced at Cordova.
Ed is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Julie Mitchell of Coal Valley, Joe and Peg Mitchell of Plainfield, Illinois, James and Laurie Mitchell of Coal Valley; and David and Brenda Mitchell of Orion; 13 grandchildren, Kelly Merrill, Nicole VanDyke, Jason Mitchell, Mike Mitchell, Katie Mitchell, Michelle DeLoose, Morgan Wolf, Molly VanDerVennet, C. J. Mitchell, Paige Mitchell, Samantha Mitchell, Nick Mitchell, and Megan Mitchell; 11 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Albert Mitchell of Moline, and Leona Burnett of New Windsor, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister and one brother.
