The former Ethel Elizabeth Boruff was born December 28, 1913, in Keithsburg, Illinois, the daughter of Omer and Phyllis (Ogle) Boruff. She graduated from Rock Island Business College, and married Hobart Whitmore on June 11, 1938, in Keithsburg. He died May 2, 1995. Ethel first worked for Standard Oil Company, Davenport, where she met her husband. She was also formerly employed by the American Republic Insurance Company, Sinclair Oil Company, and Traveler's Aid, all in the Des Moines area where she lived from 1945 until 1963. The couple lived in Davenport, Iowa, from 1963 to 1982, when they moved to Moline.
Ethel devoted her life to her church and her family with a loving heart. She was especially kind and polite, always saying "Please" and "Thank you", and was known by her friends to be a fashionable dresser. Her travels with her husband and son took her to most states and about 40 countries. Ethel was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and past-president of the South Park Women's Association and Faith Circle and Sternwheelers of the church. She was a former officer of the Davenport Women's Club, past-president of the West Des Moines Women's Club, and former member of Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines and Newcomb Presbyterian Church, Davenport. She volunteered to work at countless church rummage sales.
Ethel was an excellent cook and enjoyed home gardening. Like the rest of her family, she was never far from a bridge table.
Ethel is survived by her son, Dennis Whitmore of Manchester, Missouri; her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Bernard Rankin of Tucson, Arizona; and Sheila Davis and David Preston, a niece and nephew, both of Tucson.
Friends are invited to sign her guestbook, share a story, or light a candle in her memory at www.TrimbleFuneralHomes.com.
