Stanley E. Davis, 88, of East Moline, formerly of Poinciana, Florida, died Friday, March 28, 2008, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in Massachusetts?s National Cemetery, Bourne, Massachusetts. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is assisting the family.
Stanley Everett Davis was born September 10, 1919, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the son of Everett M. and Alice T. (Thayer) Davis. He married Hope Ryan on August 1, 1942, in Brockton. She died January 22, 1999. He was a resident of East Moline since 2001.
Stan proudly served in the US Army during World War II in C Company 21st Tank Battalion 10th Armored Division. He started his active service as a PVT in 1942, was a Tank Commander in Bastogne at the Battle of the Bulge and received a Battlefield Commission to 2nd LT In 1945. He received three Bronze Stars, a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart. He was in the Army Reserves for 31 years and retired as a COL, Commandant of the 5034 USAR School, Chicago, IL. He was a graduate of the US Army War College and US Army Command and General Staff College. He attended the 10th Armored Division reunions and the highlight was seeing the WW II Memorial with his army friends in 2004.
Stan was active in the Boy Scouts in Brockton, MA, was an Eagle Scout and served as a Scout Master. He continued with the Boy Scouts in Park Forest, IL, and was a District and Council Commissioner. He was President of the United Way in Park Forest, IL, and Budget Chairman for the United Way in Chicago.
He graduated from Wentworth Institute (Mechanical Engineering), Boston, MA, in 1939 and from DeVry Institute (Electronics), Chicago, IL, in 1947. He was employed with RCA, Radio Corporation of America, for more than 30 years in Broadcast Communications and involved from the beginning in the ?new? field of television and mobile communications.
He ?retired? to Poinciana, FL, in 1981 where he became the Assistant Manager of the Association of Poinciana Villages in 1984, and then the Manager, 1986-1987.
He started his long involvement with the Florida AARP Tax Aide Program in 1982 and eventually was the Florida 2 State Coordinator. In 1996, when he was a District Coordinator, he was responsible for 12 counties, 260 operating sites, and 1200 volunteers.
He was very interested in World War II history, computers, and enjoyed playing tennis. He strongly believed in community service and civic involvement.
Stan is survived by a daughter, Laurel Davis of East Moline, Illinois, a brother-in-law, Ernie Wilbur of Brockton, Massachusetts, and nieces, Janet Wilbur and Meredith Teague. He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister, Eleanor Wilbur, and a nephew, Steven Wilbur.
