Dwight M. Zvonik, 100, of Moline, Illinois, died Sunday, June 18, 2023, at home, with his beloved daughter, Merrie, by his side.
Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion will present military honors. Those wishing to attend should meet in the parking lot at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, at 11:15 a.m. Memorials may be made to any charity that helps veterans or animals.
Dwight Maurice Zvonik was born July 22, 1922, in Moline, the son of John and Myrtle Margaret (Brakenseik) Zvonik. He married Margaret Jane Ingelson in 1956, and the couple had a daughter, Merrie, prior to separating. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and went on to work at John Deere Harvester in East Moline for over 40 years. He worked in the engineering department as a combine designer, retiring in 1982.
Dwight was a member of the Moline American Legion Post #246 and enjoyed cars, especially his Jaguar. He loved golfing and was proud to have played in the Peoria Amateur Open. He was a people person who loved talking to others and would do anything to help someone in need. He also had a big heart and loved animals.
Dwight is survived by his daughters, Merrie Zvonik of Moline and Colleen (Stephen) Simmons of Conyers, Georgia; a granddaughter, Alicia Simmons; his brother, Roald Zvonik; several nieces and nephews; and good friend, Mike Ries of West Burlington, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Allen Zvonik and Marilyn Holm; and good friend, Valerie Ries.
