Bonnie L. McCarthy, 80, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, with The Reverend David Schultz officiating. Private interment will be in Longfellow Cemetery, Metropolis, Illinois. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to Orion United Methodist Church or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
The former Bonnie Lou Porter was born May 24, 1931, in Metropolis, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas Kidd and Mary Ethel Waters Porter. She married Patrick McCarthy, who died shortly after their marriage. She graduated from Southern Illinois University and received her Masters Degree from Western Illinois University. She taught at Horace Mann School for 42 years, retiring in 1998, and worked at Oak Glen Home during the summers.
She was a member of Orion United Methodist Church, Red Hat Society, and Illinois Home Extension, and enjoyed her bowling group, and water aerobics at the Rock Island YWCA. She was Grand Marshall at the Coal Valley Parade one year, and enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening and flowers, reading, traveling, and collecting clown figurines.
Bonnie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mike VanAcker of Sherrard, Illinois, a grandson and his wife, Wade and Donna Torres, a step-granddaughter, Jessica VanAcker; two great-grandchildren, Xavier and Tehya Torres; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Georgia Porter of Cape Coral, Florida; and nephews, Scott and Kris Porter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Benny Porter.
