Dorothy J. Smola, 85, of East Moline, Illinois, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010, in her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Private burial will be Monday at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer?s Association.
The former Dorothy Jean Fitzhugh was born October 17, 1924, in Ottumwa, Iowa. She married Roy Verre. She later married Lawrence Smola. She was an executive secretary at the Rock Island Arsenal for 30 years, retiring in 1987. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Davenport, where she was active on many committees and groups, especially the Vista Group. She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, baking, and entertaining. She and her husband enjoyed ballroom dancing, traveling in their motor home, and boating. Most especially, she doted on her grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Lawrence; two sons, Jeffrey Verre of Davenport and Dennis Verre of Lenexa, Kansas; six grandchildren and their spouses, Shaleen and Ben Sorgen with whom she lived in East Moline, Justin Verre of Colorado, Melissa and Jesse Hudson of Hesperia, California, Jessica and David Brier of Indianapolis, Indiana, Michael Verre and Spencer Verre, both of Moline; and two great-grandchildren.
