Dorothy L. Cameron, 93, long-time Sherrard Community leader, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline, Illinois.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Burial is in Western Township Cemetery, Orion, Illinois. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Sherrard, or the Sherrard Fire Department.
The former Dorothy Lucille Thor was born March 31, 1919, in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of Gust Edras and Eva Hergert Thor. She married Leo George Cameron on July 24, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. He died September 6, 1966. She worked at J. I. Case Company during WW II, and later cleaned for the Elwood Curtis family for over 30 years.
Dorothy was superintendent and teacher for over 40 years at the First Lutheran Church; was an auxiliary member of the Sherrard Fire Department holding many offices over the years; and a member of the Sherrard Women?s Club for over 50 years being President and Vice President many times plus other offices. In 1957, Dorothy went to the Sherrard town board to see about a fund raiser for a street light project, received approval and staged a big chuck wagon dinner. She helped get a Sherrard Junior Woman?s Club started in the late 1960?s on their 2nd attempt because you had to have at least 10 members, and was an election judge for many years. Dorothy?s last endeavor was at the last Sherrard Fire Department taco supper in 2011. She came to help and baked over 288 cookies and then returned afterwards helping in the kitchen and cleaning up. She helped serve over 600 people.
Dorothy is survived by six children and their spouses, Carol Huettman of Sherrard, Natalie and Dennis Dochterman of Sherrard, Gary Cameron of Moline, Ronald Cameron of Sherrard, Rosalie and John Rice of Viola, Illinois, and Kathryn and Jim Thompson of Prattville, Alabama; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James Thor of Dahinda, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Geneva Thor of Moline. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son-in-law, Walt Huettman; a brother, Harry Thor, Jr.; and a sister-in-law, Jean Thor.
