Donald L. Sommers, 80, of East Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anne's Catholic Church, East Moline, with Fr. Fredi Gomez-Torres officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., and a luncheon will follow the service. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory. Graveside services with military honors are 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Andrew, Iowa. Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, is serving the family.
Don was born May 10, 1935, in Andrew, Iowa, a son of Oscar and Sylvia (Kramer) Sommers. He graduated from Andrew High School in 1952. He served three years of active duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was honorable discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He married Betty Turner Webb on January 4, 1975, in Moline. Don was previously employed by Clinton Engines, JI Case Bettendorf, Ralston Purina and Oscar Mayer. Following retirement, he and his wife were resident managers of Coconut Bay Resort in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He and his wife were avid Cub baseball fans. Don played several years of fast pitch softball as a catcher. He loved hunting and fishing. Being the oldest of 11 kids Don was the story teller of family events that occurred during their youth.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife Betty, East Moline; children and spouses, Michael and Kris Sommers, Kathy and Mike Smeltzer, and Sandra and Mark Rice, all of Davenport, Iowa, Tammy and Brian Sullivan of Moline, and Rick Webb of Omaha Nebraska; siblings and spouses, Ronald and Karen Sommers of Bettendorf, Iowa, Oscar and Sandy Sommers of Moline, Robert Sommers of Sun City Arizona, Thomas and Kim Sommers of Long Grove, Iowa, Mary Ellen and Floyd Burmahl of Clinton, Iowa, JoAnne and Paul Konrardy, of LaMotte, Iowa, Phyllis and Joe Wingert of Arlington, Iowa, Nancy and Vernon Konrardy of LaMotte, Shirley Riniker of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Teresa and Mike Wagner of Sycamore, Illinois.
