Donald L. Chastain, 79, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Saturday, January 29, 2022, in his home surrounded by family.
Services are 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Trimble Funeral Home, 1700 1st Street, Coal Valley, with Rev. Tim Snart officiating. Visitation is 10 to 11:30 Thursday. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory following the service.
Donald Lowell Chastain was born March 13, 1942, in Bedford, Indiana, to Renzo and Myrtle (Inman) Chastain. He graduated from Lane Technical Institute with a degree in architectural drafting. He married Ruth Ann Emerson, with whom he had five children. He later married Colleen Boll who preceded him in death. He married Barbara Mallon VanHierden in 1987, in Juneau, Wisconsin. He was employed as an architectural engineer by Deere and Company for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He also owned Valycad Drafting in Coal Valley. He was a member and past president of the Coal Valley Lions Club and Western Sportsmen’s Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and Elvis.
Don is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Mike (Linda) Chastain of Prophetstown, Illinois, Kelly (Michael) Messmer and Brenda (Randy) Geesey, all of Savanna, Illinois, and Bryan (Amy) Chastain of Edwards, Illinois; step-children, Kimberly (Gary) Achterberg of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Timothy VanHierden of Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin, Kevin (Rita) VanHierden of Watertown, Wisconsin, Tammy VanHierden of Coal Valley, Lisa VanHierden of Bettendorf, and Steven Boll of Galva; 29 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Delmar (Marge) Chastain of Bloomington, Indiana; and sister-in-law Susie Chastain. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Chastain; step-daughters, Stephanie Sliger and Cheyanne VanHierden; and siblings, Dellas Chastain, Beverene Hutton Burdena Chastain, and Joellen Rigger.
