Donald H. Sale, 89, of East Moline, Illinois, formerly of Moline, died Friday, February 10, 2017, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, with Rev. Dr. David Esche officiating. Visitation is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, with additional visitation time one hour prior to services. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Donald Sale Memorial Fund at the church.
Don was born June 6, 1927, in Peru, Illinois, the son of Henry and Jean (Paton) Sale. He attended the University of Illinois and Augustana College before marrying Marilyn Sears on June 14, 1952, in Rock Island.
He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as a chemist and later as a supervisor in the electroplating department, retiring after 33 years in 1985.
Don was a very active member of South Park Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, trustee, and deacon, and also served on the Outreach, Fellowship, and Pastor Nominating Committees. He received the Presbyterian Women's Honorarium in 1991. He and Marilyn were members of the Presbyterian Mariners from 1961 to 2014, serving on local through national levels, including National Skipper.
He was also very involved with his sons growing up, serving as Cubmaster and ScoutMaster for many years, as an officer for Dad's Club, and in PTA and Moline Boys' Choir activities. He enjoyed gardening, stained glass, and cooking as well as traveling with his family.
Don is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Marilyn; two sons, Marc Sale and his wife, Nora, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Craig Sale and his husband, Dean Hokel, of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Theresa and Mike Zahn, and Garrett Donald Sale; a great-grandson, Carter Salaj; a great-granddaughter that was born the day before Don passed away, Annabelle Zahn; and a brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Evelyn Sale of Princeton, Illinois. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Kenneth Sale.
