Donald E. Chapman, 89, of East Moline, Illinois, died Thursday, April 13, 2017, In New Perspective Senior Living, Silvis, Illinois.
Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Monday in the CityView Room on the lower level at Trimble Pointe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to USS LST Ship Memorial (LSTMemorial.org/pages/donate.html).
Donald Eugene Chapman was born July 7, 1927, in Macon, Missouri, to Charles H. and Daisy Ailene Moss Chapman, He served in the U. S. Navy during WW II, enlisting at the age of 17, and married Mary Ellen Putnam on August 1, 1948, in Wichita, Kansas. He worked for the former Montgomery Elevator Company, Moline, for over 40 years, retiring as Assistant Vice President of Field Engineering in 1992. He was a member of the Gold Crew of LST-325, who restored the ship and sailed it back from Crete in 2001. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wichita, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and woodworking.
Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ellen; two children and their spouses, Charlene and Chuck Loding of Orion, Illinois, and Mike and Melissa Chapman of Geneseo, Illinois; three grandchildren, Amy Arthur and her husband Craig, Savannah Chapman, and Ross Chapman; one great-grandson, Caleb Arthur; and a sister, Martha Jane Garrow of Orlando, Florida.
