Dennis P. Runyon, age 71, of Moline, Illinois, entered Heaven peacefully on March 12, 2019, in the emergency room at Genesis Medical Center, Silvis, Illinois. With a strong based faith in Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, he fought a 17-month courageous battle with esophageal cancer having metastasized to the liver and bone.
Services are 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Riverside United Methodist Church, 712 16th Street, Moline, with Rev. Bill Adams officiating. Visitation is 4:00 -7:00 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Cremation will take place prior to services and burial will take place at Moline Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
Dennis was born May 29, 1947, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Alva and Norma (Gauler) Runyon. He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1967. From Muscatine Community College he earned an associate degree in accounting. In 1979, he graduated from St. Ambrose College having earned a B.A. in Business Administration - Finance and Accounting.
He was introduced to the love of his life and on Friday, November 10, 1989, Dennis and Susan Trulson were united in the sacrament of Holy Matrimony at Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, Bettendorf, Iowa. They were married for 29 years, 4 months and 2 days.
Dennis was employed by several manufacturing-based companies, including French and Hecht, John Deere, and most recently AVG Autotech Controls of Davenport, Iowa.
Dennis was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Moline. Previous memberships were held at First Presbyterian Church in Milan and All Saints Episcopal in Rock Island. Dennis and Susan were involved with Worldwide Marriage Encounter, Presbyterian Marriage Encounter (P.M.E.), and served a three-year term on the local board of P.M.E. Dennis served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church and was a Promise Keeper. He loved the Lord, Jesus Christ and always took opportunity to share his faith.
He was a well-versed reader having enjoyed literature of many subjects of interest; with early colonial American history as a favorite. His love and deep appreciation of music developed and was nurtured in his marriage union to Susan, as she has performed classical and sacred music for many years. He was an Iowa Hawkeye, St. Ambrose Bees and Augustana Vikings fan. He loved family gatherings, especially being together for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
Dennis and Susan enjoyed traveling here in the United States with trips to New England (Boston and Kennebunkport), many renowned sites of Washington, D.C., Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, Mt. Vernon, and Gettysburg National Military Park. Drives through areas of the Great Smoky Mountains, visiting lighthouses along the Great Lakes and the magnificent Niagara Falls were wonderful times. A visit touring sites of the southwest region of the United States were wonderful memories, especially the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. On the wild and adventurous side of their marriage, they enjoyed trips to Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay and Disney World in Orlando.
The family cares to express deep gratitude to the following health care providers - University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, the Department of Gastroenterology, Dr. Rami El Abiad, Department of Heart and Vascular, Dr. Kalpaj Parekh and Joan Ricks-McGillin, R.N., entire nursing staff of 4 Roy Carver Surgical Care Unit and Department of Otolaryngology, Dr. Henry Hoffman, Cancer Center located at 7th St. Moline, special thanks to Dr. Thomas Stoffel and the entire cancer radiation care specialists, Dr. David M. Spector, Oncologist and Karla Hasley, R.N. along with the entire staff of Medical Arts Associates and Genesis Cancer Institute.
Thank you to the nurses of the UnityPoint and Genesis Infusion Centers, Dr. Ann Kandis and staff of the Genesis Emergency Room Department, Silvis, that provided wonderful care in the last hour of his remarkable Earthly journey, and to the entire Pharmacy staff of Hy-Vee located at Avenue of the Cities, Moline.
Special love and gratitude to the faith communities of Riverside United Methodist, All Saints Episcopal and First Presbyterian Church of Milan, and to all friends and neighbors in providing support.
He is survived by his wife, Susan of Moline; brother, William and (Melissa) Runyon of Muscatine. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Alva and Norma Runyon.
