Delores J. Ghys, 90, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at home.
Services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, with Rev. Tim Snart officiating. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley.
The former Delores VanLaningham was born March 10, 1927, in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Lemuel and Margaret VanLaningham. She received her education in the Peoria school system. In 1946, she married Russell Peplow and he is predeceased.
She moved to the Quad Cities in 1958 and started working for A&P Tea Company through 1969. In January of 1970, she began her career at Royal Neighbors of America and retired in 1996 as President and CEO.
In March of 1981, she married Frank A. Ghys at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island, where she was a member for many years. Frank and Delores traveled extensively throughout the world. They were members of Oakwood Country Club, where she thoroughly enjoyed the people and watching golf. She also enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, but most of all she loved watching her grandson, Ray Guss, Jr., race stock cars.
Delores is survived by daughters, Margaret Guss of Calhoun, Georgia, and Betty (Dick) Welsh of Coal Valley; grandchildren, Ray (Julie) Guss Jr. of Milan, and Debbie (Jim) Smith of Calhoun; great-grandsons, Jason (Brandon) Miller-Guss, Evan Guss, and Adam Guss; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; three sisters, Hazel, Velma, and Martha; a brother, Lemuel; an infant son, Russell Peplow, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Ray Guss, Sr.
