David M. James

David “Red” Max James, of Hampton, Illinois, passed away Thursday, January 13th, in Unity Point Health - Trinity, Bettendorf, Iowa.

David Max James was born May 29, 1943, in Muscatine, Iowa, to Max and Inez (McMahon) James. He attended Davenport High School, after which he spent time as a car mechanic and a coal miner. He married Ellen Jane Johnson on February 8, 1963, in Davenport, Iowa. He spent 39 years as a welder, retiring from Caterpillar in 2005.

Dave was an avid gardener and managed to grow the best sweet corn and largest, juiciest tomatoes within city limits. He loved working on cars, watching western movies, relentlessly spoiling his animals, and cooking generous meals for his family. Everyone especially LOVED “Reds” tacos.

Dave was quite the comedian, even though he didn’t mean to be. His random and honest thoughts often resulted in an uproar of laughter from his unsuspecting family. He never could quite understand what they thought was so funny, which made it even more charming.

Dave is survived by children, Scott (Maggie) James of Davenport, Iowa, Shawn (Marsha) James of Eldridge, Iowa, Mitzie James of East Moline, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Kristi (Josh) Francis, Chris (Jessie) James, Brittany (Mike) Koopman, Jennifer (Adam) Johnson, Megan (Sara) Davidson, Katie James, Andy James, Emily James; and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Tonya Chouselor.

At David’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service, however his family invites you to honor his memory by enjoying one of his favorite meals - tacos.
