David K. Poffenbarger, 71, of Rock Island, Illinois, well-known Masonic youth leader, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 18, 2015, in his home.
A Masonic funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, with a hospitality visitation following until 8:30 p.m. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trimble Funeral Home. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family at a funeral luncheon at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe following the burial. Memorials may be made to Templar Chapter, Order of DeMolay, Rock Island, or to the David Poffenbarger Memorial Fund for his grandchildren's education.
David Keith Poffenbarger was born August 9, 1943, in Rock Island, to Keith and Helen (Cramer) Poffenbarger. He graduated from Rock Island High School and Blackhawk College. He married Judith Ann Berry on February 12, 1965, in Muscatine, Iowa. He was a contract specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal for 20 years, retiring in 2005, and previously worked at International Harvester Farmall Works, Rock Island, for 20 years.
Dave was active in the Masonic fraternity and its youth organization, the Order of DeMolay. He was a member of Moline Lodge #1014, AF & AM, a 33rd Degree member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline; and a member of York Rite Bodies in Rock Island, where he served as High Priest of Rock Island Chapter #18, Royal and Select Masters. As an active member of DeMolay, he was Past Master Councilor, and received the Chevalier Degree. As an adult leader of DeMolay, he was a member of the Legion of Honor, an Active Member of the Supreme Council of DeMolay International, past Grand Organist, and past Executive Officer for Illinois. He was named Advisor of the Year by the Illinois State DeMolay, and Outstanding Youth Advisor several times by the Illinois Grand Lodge of Masons. He was past president of Rock Island High Twelve Club, and a member of the Moline High Twelve Club, Kaaba Shrine, Davenport, Mohassan Grotto, the Order of Eastern Star, the Red Cross of Constantine, and the Rosicrucian Society. He served on the Advisory Council and was past Chapter Dad of Templar Chapter, Order of DeMolay, Rock Island, and was on the Advisory Board for the Order of Rainbow in Rock Island, and received Rainbow's Grand Cross of Color.
He was past president of the Milan Rotary Club, was inducted into the Black Hawk College Hall of Fame, and active in the Republican Party in Rock Island County. He enjoyed the weekly breakfast meetings of the Ronald Reagan Club at City Limits, playing euchre, and supporting his grandchildren's activities, and applauding their accomplishments.
Dave is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy; two children and their spouses, Laura and Dan James of Rock Island, and John and Brenna Poffenbarger of Hampton, Virginia; three grandchildren, Devin James, Carson James, and Gabrielle Poffenbarger; Cousins, Sue and Mark Edwards of Arizona and John and Linda Madsen of Rock Island; Judy's mother, Leda Berry-Buetel of Lenexa, Kansas; and Judy's sister and her husband, Julie and Mark Suchy, of Milan, and their sons, Hunter and Chase Suchy.
