Paul Unruh, 72, of Moline, Illinois, well-known high school and college football coach, died Friday, October 30, 2009, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, where he was a member. The Reverend Dr. Donald Jackson will officiate. Visitation is 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, where friends are invited to join the family in sharing memories and stories of Paul at 6:30 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or to the Quad City Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Box 131, Eldridge, Iowa 52748.
Paul Duane Unruh was born February 15, 1937, in Casselton, North Dakota, the son of Wesley and Adeline Florence (Martin) Unruh. He graduated from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, before receiving his Masters Degree at the University of Iowa. He married Marlys Moderow on August 24, 1957, in Casselton, North Dakota.
Paul was a teacher and Football Coach at Moline High School for 16 years, retiring in 1993, and also was Assistant Football Coach at Augustana College for 14 years. Previously, he taught and coached at West Chicago High School.
Paul was a past member of the Financial Committee and past officer in the Methodist Mens? Club. He was a member of the Illinois Coaches Association, the Quad City Board of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association, and the American Football Coaches Association. He enjoyed reading, fishing, his grandchildren, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Marlys; his mother, Adeline Unruh of Lodi, California; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kristy Unruh of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, Daniel and Sara Unruh of Marshall, Wisconsin, Thomas and Janice Unruh of Erie, Illinois, and James and Nancy Unruh of Carthage, Illinois; grandchildren, Kloe, Austin, John, Katie, Maggie, Albert, Anna, Jessica, and Kali Unruh; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Nancy Unruh; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Bill Elzy, and Candy and Tony Hawkins; a brother-in-law, Jerry Moderow; and sisters-in-law, JoAnn Larson and Lyle Roesler, and Delores Dryburgh, and her husband Tom.
