Cynthia Jean Meers, 66, of Moline, Illinois, died Thursday, June 29, 2017, in Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Point, 701 12th Street, Moline, with The Rev. Craig Jan-McMahon officiating. Burial is in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Shipley Scholarship Fund at Moline High School.
The former Cynthia Jean Shipley was born August 8, 1950, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Howard Eugene and Barbara Pherigo Shipley. She graduated from Moline High School in 1968 and then from Northeast Missouri State, and married Bruce Meers on February 7, 1976, in Moline. She was a substitute teacher for Moline School District #40 for nearly 30 years.
Cindy lived life happily and full of laughter. Those who knew her can hear that laughter still. Her family and grandchildren gave her the most joy of all. With each new grandbaby, GoGo would be full of snuggles, kisses and gentle arms to fall asleep. Cindy loved her summer travels with family and friends to the mountains of Grand Teton National Park to see her cowboy Bruce and also vacationing with friends at the white sand beaches of Florida. A life long Moliner, Cindy took pride in supporting all things Moline, from Garfield Elementary PTA, to a lifetime of Homecoming Parades, and attending countless athletic events where she was always ready to stand clap and cheer "We are Moliners." Even though long ago, Cindy always held dear the time spent with Moline Track and her dad, Coach Shipley. Cindy's hobbies included a passion for reading, with an extensive collection of murder mystery novels, taking her grandkids to the movies, with theatre popcorn of course, and getting the best bargains around while shopping for her family.
Cindy is survived by her husband, Bruce; three children and spouses, Christopher and Aubrey Meers of Moline; Robin and Jeffrey Dubrow of Atlanta, Georgia, and Becca and Dustin Peterson of Moline; five grandchildren, Payden Meers, Ben and Jack Dubrow, and Abe and Margaret Peterson; her father Gene Shipley of Moline; and her brother Michael Shipley of Panama, and best friends Mari Lehnherr and Pat Shannon. Cindy was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Shipley.
A special Thank You to her caregivers and friends at Select Specialty Hospital for the love and dignity shown to her in the final stages of life. Cindy's family invites friends to share stories and condolences at TrimbleFuneralHomes.com.
