Craig L. Norris

November 12, 1953 — November 6, 2016

Craig L. Norris, 62, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Services are 1:00 p.m. Friday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. The family requests those attending to wear Red, White, and Blue for Veterans Day. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Following services, cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory with burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shoes for Vets or the Iowa Donor Network.

Craig was born November 12, 1953, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Cecil and Mamie (Cook) Norris. He married Kathleen Hawkins-Woods on September 24, 2005, in Bloomfield, Iowa. Previously, he had been married to Joanne Waller.

He served over 20 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1992. He went on to work for the Iowa Workforce Development, serving as a Veterans Representative. He retired October 31, 2016, after 24 years.

Craig was a strong advocate for veterans, especially those in need. He helped with several campaigns including Stand Down for Homeless Veterans, a food drive at work for homeless veterans, and a toy drive at work for Toys for Tots. He received a liver transplant in 2013, and was always thankful to the Iowa Donor Network for their assistance.

He was a lifelong member of Vietnam Veterans of America. He enjoyed fishing and camping, the St. Louis Cardinals, and loved decorating for Christmas and dressing up as Santa. Above all else, family was the most important thing to Craig, especially his grandchildren.

Craig is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; a daughter, Amy (Himar) Norris-Hernandez, of Ottumwa; a step-daughter, Stephanie (John) Van Roekel of West Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Belen and Noelia Hernandez-Norris, and Holland and Heide Van Roekel; a brother, Cecil (Sandra) Norris of Florida, and their family; a foster-brother, Joseph Troxel of Ottumwa; and brothers-in-law, Kevin Hawkins of Oelwein, Iowa, and Keith (Judy) Hawkins of Anamosa, Iowa, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Norris; and a granddaughter, Pino Hernandez-Norris.
