East Moline, Illinois Services for Craig D. Crippen, 78, of East Moline, are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Moline, with The Reverend Dr. Kenneth Kline officiating. Burial is in National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal, where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. A memorial fund will be established in his name. Mr. Crippen died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in his home. He was born Lawrence Edwin Miles, Jr. on October 22, 1922, in Lyons, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Leona (Getty) Miles. He was adopted as a child by Walter and Cecil (Brady) Crippen, who named him Craig. He married Betty Covault on March 8, 1947, in Davenport, Iowa. He served in the U. S. Navy during WW II and was involved in several battles in the Pacific Theater aboard the U. S. S. South Dakota. He was a machinist at International Harvester Farmall Works, Rock Island, for 22 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Moline Lodge #1014, AF & AM, and Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline. He was a ham radio operator, operating WA9GBP and KB9XD, was an avid reader and history buff, enjoyed being outdoors and working in his yard, and loved being with his family. Craig is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherrie and Michael VanDolah of Wilton, Iowa, and Laurie and Roger Reinke of East Moline; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Deborah Crippen of Bushnell, Illinois, and John and Lori Crippen of Colona; seven grandchildren, Tammy Ridens, Belinda Robertson, Tim Crippen, Jessica Crippen, Stephanie Crippen, Andrew Crippen, and Eric Reinke; and sisters, Bernadine Kirks of Colorado Springs, CO, Geraldine Grandbouche of Belton, MO, Gayle Gawlik of Worth, IL, Eileen Albee of Amboy, IL, Sharon Miles of Chicago, and Joan Mares of Glendale, AZ; and a brother, Bob Crippen of Andover, IL.
