Charlie James Babers was born June 1, 1947, in Louisville, Mississippi, the son of the late Dan and Isabel (Moore) Babers. Upon moving to Rock Island in 1965, Charlie became employed by Alcoa Works. He remained an employee for over 38 years, working as a Journeyman Electrician for 30 years, as a graduate of Alcoa’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program.
More importantly, Charlie loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Moline, serving on the Trustee board, Usher board, and worked in the “Hugs From Home” ministry. He also worked as the president of the TBC Choir and in the TBC Male Chorus. Charlie was frequently asked to sing the song, “I Feel Like Going On”.. and he did! Charlie loved the choir. He loved to sing and will be greatly missed.
Charlie has gone on to be with his predeceased parents and sisters, Ollie, Corrine, Helen, Louise, and brothers, Lee, Robert, Dan, R.C., Hubert, Ben and Eugene.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Juanita; three loving daughters, Vetra Glinsey, Joyce Babers-Metcalf, and Chenelle Babers; and inherited bonus children, Eugene Wyatt, Darin Wyatt and Natalie Stevenson. Charlie’s lone surviving sibling is his devoted sister, Jean Babers. Also left to cherish his memory are his loved sons-in-law, Edward Glinsey, Sr., Patrick Metcalf, and Rick Stevenson. A proud grandfather, Charlie is lovingly remembered by grandchildren, Britanni, JacQuez, Brianna, Edward Jr., Patrick Jr., Audria, Ashley, Ricky, Ranissa, Jazmyne, Anthanious, Alexandria; and great-grandchildren, Mylea, Robert, Zariya, Sir Anthony, Nina, Mia and Emory. In addition, Charlie will be forever lovingly remembered by a host of loved nephews and nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, and friends… who became like family.
