Charles Newton Slaughter, 79, of Colona, Illinois, died Saturday, September 3, 2022, at home surrounded by family.
Celebration of life services will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, under the direction of Trimble Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established in Charles’ memory.
Charles Newton Slaughter was born April 4, 1943, in Red Bay, Alabama, the son of Carl Newton and Esthelee (Markham) Slaughter. He married Amy Jo Scott on December 2, 1961. They enjoyed spending their winters in Texas and their shenanigans in Mexico.
He worked at John Deere Harvester for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. Charles coached softball and baseball for several years, helping his grandson’s Quad City Heat team win the 2009 Iowa State Championship. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers’ fan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family at his river property.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 61 years, Amy Jo; two daughters, Kim (Tim) Bowden, and Kassandra (Kasey Newton) Walters, both of Colona; seven grandchildren, Kayla, Chad, Cody, Rachel, Shane, Toby, and Griffin; four great-grandchildren, Corbin, Ashton, Allison, and Blakely; and siblings, Alice Martin, Jimmy Slaughter, Travis Slaughter, Marty Slaughter, and Sue Hubble. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles N. Slaughter, Jr.; and siblings, Marvin Slaughter and Mary Cleo.
