Carolyn Fredericka Hengst of Moline, Illinois, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018, at lllini Restorative Care, Silvis, at the age of 101.
Memorial services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Salem Lutheran Church, 1724 15th Street, Moline, with The Rev. Dr. Randy Willers officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Cremation has taken place at Trimble Crematory under the direction of Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church.
The former Carolyn Falberg was born January 8, 1917, in Champaign, Illinois, the daughter of Frederick and Elisa Ferdinandsen Falberg. She married Arthur Hengst on May 29, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was a typesetter for the Tri-City Blue Print Company, Moline, and a member of Graphic Arts Local #518, retiring in 1985. In her earlier years she was employed at the former AMETEK Company in East Moline, where she was a secretary to her husband.
She was a charter member of George Washington Elementary School PTA and was awarded a life membership in the national PTA Association. She always was active in the church and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Moline. She enjoyed traveling, reading, working crossword puzzles, and had been an avid flower gardener.
Survivors include a daughter, Gretel Hengst of Moline; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard and Christine Hengst of Green Valley, Arizona, and Eric and Gail Hengst of Benicia, California; grandchildren, Melissa (Sean) Griffin, Stephanie Hengst, and Bryan Hengst; step-grandson, Brent Bowgren; great-grandchildren, Rhys Griffin and Rowan Griffin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Fred, Edward, James, and John; and sisters Mabel Dobyns, Margaret Jones, Dorothy Kline, and Gladys Hoff.
