Moline, Illinois Calvin R. Schwarz, 77, formerly of Moline, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at his home in The Fort Armstrong, Rock Island. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, East Moline, with The Reverend Kent Umbarger officiating. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, 601 21st Street, Moline. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne Seminary, German-American Heritage Center, or Illini Visiting Nurses. Calvin Ray Schwarz was born April 5, 1925, in Newton, Iowa, the son of Charles F. and Lorna (Snyder) Schwarz. He married Ruth B. Ball on March 2, 1945, in Wilton, Iowa. He was hardware manager at K-Mart in Bettendorf, Iowa, for two years, retiring in 1974 on disability. He previously worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for 11 years, Aid Association for Lutherans as District Representative for nine years, and as a Commercial Driving Instructor for four years. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Calvin was very active in his church, St. John's Lutheran Church, East Moline, where he served as an Elder and as president of the 60-Plus Group for five years. He was a Fraternal Insurance Counselor and a Life Underwriters Training Counselor, a member of the Abraham Lincoln Camp of Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, and a former member of the Board of United Cerebral Palsy, Lutheran Layman's League, and Quad Cities Friendship Force. He enjoyed woodcarving, plastic canvas stitching, writing theological papers, ceramics, and reading. He was well known for entertaining as Santa Claus at private parties and department stores for several years. Calvin is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Ruth; two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Johnny Tingle of Rock Island and Paula and David Pratt of Moline; a son, Bernard Schwarz of Roseville, Michigan; daughters-in-law, Janice Schwarz and Barb Johnson, both of Davenport, and Debra Schwarz of East Moline; nine grandchildren, Tamra Tingle, Jennifer Geyssens, Terra Reno, Todd Schwarz, Mikayla Schwarz, Jonathan Pratt, Chad Johnson, Summer Fay, and Catina Schwarz; three step-grandchildren, Melissa Wanek, Tim Wren and Kimberly Wren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Myrtle Schwarz of Newton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by daughters, Ellen Faye Schwarz and Diana F. Johnson, a son, Dwayne L. Schwarz, a grandson, Randall Schwarz, and a brother, Floyd Schwarz.
