Evelyn was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 30, 1911, the daughter of Charles A. and Lila Marie (Swanson) Carlson. Her family moved to Moline when she was five years old. She attended Moline public schools and graduated in 1929. Evelyn worked as secretary and office manager for the William Schulske Architectural Firm in Moline. It was there that she met Howard Parkhurst. They married August 19, 1936, and together, they designed their first home which, after several additions, became Evelyn?s home for 62 years. Howard died April 25, 1983.
During her years in Moline, Evelyn spent much of her time doing volunteer and service work. She served on various boards for many organizations including the following: PTA at Garfield and John Deere, Brownies/Girls Scouts, Cub Scouts, Moline Visiting Nurse Association, Cleveland Home/Friendship Manor, Moline Public Hospital Auxiliary, Republican Women?s Club of Rock Island County, Quad-City Symphony Orchestra Association, Bethany, Church Women United, Augustana Endowment, Pock Island County Historical Society and Literary Guild of Moline. She was a member of Jane Addams King?s Daughters Circle, Chapter BL of P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Mary Martha Guild of the First Congregational Church in Moline. Until her death, she was one of the oldest members of the church. She was also a member of Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and Outing Club of Davenport where she loved to play bridge. In addition to playing bridge, she loved reading, traveling and attending theater performances. She also assisted in the care of many elderly family members and friends. She was a loving and caring person who gave generously of herself and wanted nothing in return.
She moved to Danforth in 2001 to be closer to her daughter.
