Barbara Shirk, 73, of Sylvania, Ohio, died on Wednesday May 14, 2008, after a long illness.
A short Prayer Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Saint Michaels in the Hills Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio.
The former Barbara Ann Needham was born October 7, 1934, in Moline, the daughter of Mary and Frank Needham. She married George Shirk on June 28, 1958, in Moline. Her family moved to Sylvania in 1972.
Barbara graduated from Moline High School and earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Art History and design from the University of Toledo. She worked as an Archivist Assistant and Manuscripts processor in the Canady Center of the Carlson Library at the University of Toledo.
She was active in church and community organizations. Prior to attending Saint Michaels in the Hills Episcopal Church, she served on the alter guild at Saint Matthews Episcopal church for over 20 years. After retirement she served as a volunteer at Flower Memorial Hospital in the Chaplin?s office for over ten years and was a member of the hospital?s Auxiliary. She also volunteered for three years at Sylvan Elementary School as a reading tutor.
Barbara is survived by her husband, George; a son, Tracey Shirk of Seattle, Washington; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Shirk-Lambert and Robert Lambert of Margate, Florida; a sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Roland Franks of Maryville, Tennessee; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Joyce Needham of Coal Valley, Illinois, Jim and Marion Needham of Moline, and Frank Needham of Moline; and an uncle, Walter J. Kavanski of Moline.
