Arthur W. Gustus, 93, longtime Moline police officer, died Saturday, April 13, 2013, at The Lighthouse at Silvis, Illinois.
Services are 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, Moline, where he was a member. The Reverend Michael Swartz will officiate. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan.
Arthur Wayland Gustus was born December 19, 1919, in Moline, the son of Arthur E. and Freeda (Lebbert) Gustus. He married Rhea Flynn on September 24, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. She died August 14, 1977. He married June Kerr on January 5, 1980, in Moline.
Art served in the United States Army during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Following his service, he became a police officer with the Moline Police Department, where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1980 as Captain. He briefly played Minor League baseball, and then played for the police department team. He also helped to start the school crossing program in Moline.
He was pleased to travel to Washington D.C. with the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. He enjoyed gardening and birds, and was a St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Art is survived by his wife, June, of Moline, a step-son, Bruce Kerr of Gainesville, Georgia, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, four nieces, and two nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ferne Struss and Frances Brissman.
