Arthur – Art to his Illinois friends, but ‘Sandy’ to those in New York -- was born November 12, 1926 to Abel C. Sandberg and Louise Samuelson Sandberg in Chicago, Illinois. As a young boy, his family moved to Bishop Hill. After graduating from Galva High School in 1944, Art enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Art relocated to Long Island and went to work at Whitbread’s Lumberyard. He married Beverly Wondsel on September 6, 1952, and moved to Island Park. In 1991, Art retired, moved back to Galva and reconnected with family and childhood friends.
Art was a gifted athlete who pitched for several fast-pitch softball teams in Bishop Hill and New York. He enjoyed fishing, frisbee golf, biking, skating, gardening, watching sports and attending River Bandits games in Peoria.
He is survived by sons Arthur Sandberg Jr. of New Hyde Park, NY, and Robert Sandberg of Island Park, NY, and grandchildren Alexa, Kristyn, and Ryan.
