Alphonso J. "Al" Castel, Sr., 92, of Moline, Illinois, died Thursday, May 26, 2016, in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, with Rev. Donald Levitt officiating. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery with M.A.V.A. and Patriot Guard Riders presenting military honors. The Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with visitation following until 7 p.m., at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Additional visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 8890, East Moline, or American Heart Association.
Alphonso Joseph Castel was born April 20, 1924, in Davenport, Iowa, to Jesus and Sara Valdez Castel. He served in the US Army during WW II. He married Florence Ahrens in 1946, in Davenport, and they were later divorced. He married Elizabeth Inman on October 17, 1982, in Galesburg, Illinois. She died October 16, 2011. H was employed at IH Farmall Works, Rock Island, for 36 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church and VFW Post 8890, East Moline, and enjoyed bowling and boxing.
Al is survived by six children and their spouses, Diana Soliz of Moline, Ramona and Eric Gumban of Austin, Texas, Becky and David Navarro of Moline, Joseph Castel of East Moline, Scott and Martina Castel of Moline, and Shane Castel of Abilene, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and siblings and spouses, Anne Montecino of Silvis, Illinois, Sarah and Peter Compos of Moline, and Raymond and Gay Castel of Eldridge, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Castel, and siblings, Jesse Castel, Teresa Alonzo, Cora Ahrens, and Petra Palos.
