Alonzo P. Fortin, Jr., 80, of Moline, Illinois, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Don Knowles officiating. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline, or Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Alonzo Phillias Fortin was born January 27, 1932, in Rockland, Massachusetts, the son of Alonzo Sr. and Mildred Reed Fortin. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Al married Betty Louise Duke on December 24, 1953, in Etowah County, Alabama, She died May 28, 2007. He married Gloria Warren Seuss, on March 7, 2009, in Moline. He was employed by the Department of Defense at the Rock Island Arsenal for 35 years, retiring as a small weapons expert in 1987. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline, Moline Lodge #1014, AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline, and American Legion Post #246, Moline. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, hunting, fishing, and playing cards, especially euchre, and loved playing with his grandchildren when they were little and his great-grandchildren. He was an avid Alabama, Nebraska, and Iowa fan.
Al is survived by his wife, Gloria; two children and their spouses, David and Debi Fortin and Cheryl and Michael Welch, all of Moline; five grandchildren and their spouses, Derek and Sara Fortin, Sarah and Uriah Thieme, Chad and Rebecca Tipsword, Ashley Welch, and Shawn Welch and his fiancée Roxy Reed; six great-grandchildren; three step-sons and their wives, Charles and Lola Tanner of Guam, and Kevin and Shirley Tanner and Scott and Julie Tanner, all of Rock Island; four step-grandchildren, James and Teena Tanner, Bradley Tanner, Deannea Tanner, and Stephanie Tanner; and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; and a brother, Robert Fortin.
