Alfred Menke

October 30, 1936 — May 31, 2023

Bettendorf, Iowa

After a valiant fight with pancreatic cancer, Alfred “Al” Menke, 86, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

At a later date, graveside services will take place at the Rock Island National Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf, Iowa. Cremation will take place prior to services at Trimble Funeral Home and Crematory, 701 12th Street, Moline, Illinois.

Alfred John Menke was born October 30, 1936, in Cold Spring, Minnesota, to Clarence and Loretta (Leither) Menke. He married the love of his life, Carol Lykke, on April 25, 1964, in Leonardtown, Maryland. After being stationed in Maryland, Minnesota, Florida, and Virginia, they arrived in Bettendorf, Iowa in 1974 and made it their lifelong home.

After traveling the world during this 30-year career in the Navy, Al retired and started a second career as a realtor for 26 years. He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf, Iowa. He was an avid fan of his beloved Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, and Bettendorf Bulldogs (1993 Most Loyal Fan). You could always find him at his grandchildren’s events, playing card games, and connecting with people on Facebook. He always enjoyed his monthly breakfasts with his McCarthy Bush Realty family. Al always spoke his mind and you knew where you stood with him. He could always make you laugh, whether intentional or not.

Al is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Mike (Shawn) Menke, Scott (Barb) Menke, Steve (Heidi) Menke, and Tom Menke; grandchildren, Alex, Harley, Hunter, Quinton, Gage, Erin, Brock, and Rudy; and siblings, Kaye Nutz and Gary Menke. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Joyce, Carol, and Carol Ann; and brother, Bob.

The family would like to thank the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for the excellent care that they provided during his fight.

All memorials will be donated to charity in Al's name.
