Leslie A. Ingelson, 99, life-long Moline resident and decorated WW II Veteran, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis, Illinois.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, with The Reverend Larry Conway officiating. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline, where American Legion Post #246, Moline, will present military honors. Visitation is 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, where Moline Lodge #1014, AF & AM, will conduct Masonic funeral services at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, where Les was a member for over 80 years.
Leslie Alvin Ingelson was born January 5, 1910, in Moline, the son of Adolph Theodore and Hilda Marie (Lindquist) Ingelson. He graduated from Moline High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He married Verna Evelyn Johnson on November 2, 1947, in Moline. She died May 18, 1987.
Corporal Ingelson served as a surgical technician with the 24th Division, 24th Medical Battalion, Company D, and was in eight battles in the Philippines and New Guinea. Among other decorations and two bronze battle stars, he received a bronze arrowhead for being in the first wave to land in the Philippines in 1943. His decorations are displayed in the Court of Patriots at the Browning Memorial Museum on the Rock Island Arsenal.
Les was a material handler in the shipping department at International Harvester Farmall Works, Rock Island, for over 31 years, retiring in 1978. He previously worked at the Augustana Book Concern and Moline Public Hospital.
He was a Life Member of Moline Lodge #1014, AF & AM; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline; Moline American Legion Post #246, where he served as historian and Sergeant-At-Arms, VFW Post #2135, and 24th Infantry Division. He was a member of Thor Lodge #9, Order of Vikings, where he served as trustee for 9 years, Quad City Ostomy Association, Quad City Civil War Round Table, Swenson Swedish Immigration Center, and UAW Local 1309 Retirees. He was an avid reader, and loved history and had a remarkable mind for historical facts and figures. He was proud of his Swedish heritage and enjoyed tracing his genealogy and corresponding with his Swedish relatives. Les loved talking with people and sharing stories.
Les is survived by his daughter, Jeannine E. Ingelson of Moline; a brother, Robert T. Ingelson of Moline; a sister-in-law, Mildred Johnson of Aledo, Illinois; a first cousin and his wife, Rodney and Loretta Lindquist of Moline; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Linda Ingelson, and a brother, Carl Ingelson.
